Wine
Wairau River takes its name from the beautiful braided river upon the banks of which Phil and Chris Rose first planted their vineyards in 1978. The Rose family were pioneers in the now prestigious Marlborough district of Rapaura and were among the first to recognise the potential of the region's free draining stony soil and abundantly pure artesian water and the part they could play in viticulture. After supplying grapes for other wine labels for several years, Phil and Chris decided in 1991 to release a wine under their own label and so the Wairau River brand was born.
Family owned and managed, Wairau River (Maori for 'many waters') is one of the largest independent wine estates in Marlborough. With four estate vineyards, Wairau River Wines maintains total commitment to quality, carefully managing these sites to ensure low yields.
The range of elegant wines is characteristically expressive of its Marlborough roots. The flagship of the estate range is the multi award winning Sauvignon Blanc. The pinnacle of Wairau River's vineyard expression is the Home Block series, a low production single site range made from the vineyard around the home of Phil and Chris.
